  • Officials dedicate new wing at Romeo Elementary

    Fourth- and fifth-graders at Romeo Elementary School received an early Christmas present.
    Students and staff moved into the $2.3 million, 10-room wing on campus Dec. 10.
    Now, they get the better part of the year to enjoy the state-of-the-art facility, which has smart boards in each room. Smart boards are similar to projectors used in schools years ago, only smart boards connect to a computer.

  • Chamber prepping for annual awards gala

    It’s time to “Reach for the Stars.”
    The Dunnellon Chamber of Commerce is busily preparing for its annual awards/installation dinner at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Rainbow River’s Clubhouse.
    Natalia’s Gourmet Catering will provide the meal for the event. The buffet style menu includes a variety of Italian cuisine.

  • Flame of hope

    It might have taken just a minute to light the torch, but once lit, a raucous crowd gathered at Wal-Mart let out a large cheer.
    And so the flame of hope carried on April 24 for the third annual Dunnellon Police Department Special Olympics Torch Run, as it wound its way south on U.S. 41 toward the Downtown Historic District more than 150 law enforcement officers, administrative staff, volunteers and special VIP guests and athletes started the 1.3-mile run/walk.

  • Tigers-to-be see glimpse of future

    Dunnellon Middle School eighth-graders caught a small glimpse of high school life and what it has to offer in the halls of academia.
    On Monday and Tuesday, students were given brief tours of the school, but more importantly got an opportunity to see the opportunities the school offered in academics, clubs and organizations.

  • Police: Man pilfers beer

    If Michael Wesson were a cat, then the Texas transient just used up his ninth life.
    Wesson, 55, was charged with felony petit theft April 25, according to an arrest report, which noted he has eight prior convictions for theft, the most recent convictions being August 2005 and December 2001.
    The report stated Wesson attempted to take two 24-packs of Busch beer from Walmart, valued at $29.94, walking past the point of sale when a Walmart Asset Protection Coordinator apprehended Wesson before authorities arrived.

  • Residents still flush with frustration

    That 25 percent surcharge the city is tacking on to Rainbow Springs residents' water/sewer bills is not going away, not after officials finally revealed it was a key point in purchasing the Rainbow Springs Utility system.
    Former County Commissioner Barbara Fitos issued a storm warning at the onset of the meeting telling residents to remain civil until all presentations were complete, or else she would cancel the meeting.

    As the plane came hurtling toward the earth, one spectator screamed “oh my god, oh my god.”
    Suddenly, the pilot quickly pulled back on the throttle and she was headed back toward the heavens.
    By the time Melissa Pemberton finished her routine, the applause and roar from the crowd of 60 to 80 people gathered Saturday at the Dunnellon-Marion County Airport made almost as much noise as the single-engine craft that took to the skies.

  • Festival honors town’s history

    Dunnellon will be booming once again, as the Dunnellon Area Chamber of Commerce celebrates the town’s mining boom of the 1800s with its annual Boomtown Days Dunnellon.
    “It’s really great, it’s going to be so exciting,” Beverly Leisure, executive director of the Chamber, said. “It all comes together.”

  • Tiered rate structure focal point of meeting

    Still reeling from the aftershock of the purchase of the Rainbow Springs Utility system almost four months ago, city officials are taking another step forward in attempting to mend the fences with the more than 1,000 customers affected by the purchase.
    City leaders, representatives from Burton & Associates as well as Lewis Bryant from Kimley-Horn & Associates will make presentations. City Manager Lisa Aligere on Tuesday said she is still awaiting confirmation from officials with the Southwest Florida Water Management District (Swiftmud) if they will be present.

  • RS POA guaging interest in course

    In August 2011, Mark Kaprelian announced he was selling Rainbow Springs Golf and Country Club.
    Now, he might have an interested party in purchasing the course – the Rainbow Springs Property Owners Association. But before any deal can be completed, residents of the POA will have to take a vote about the issue.
