Augie Salzer For the Riverland News Pope Francis’ visit to the United States last week was an extremely exciting event for Roman Catholics, the Hispanic people and, especially, for a local couple. Born in Buenos Aires, Francis is the first pope from Latin America and the first to hold a canonization ceremony on U.S. soil. The pope elevated Junipero Serra, a Franciscan friar and a professor of Philosophy in the 1700s, to be a saint. Serra offered to leave his home in Spain and take the gospel to Mexico, then to California where he started the first nine of 21 Spanish missions.
